The EU Is Finally Taking Action on Unsold Clothes and Shoes
The EU has introduced new rules to stop companies from destroying unsold clothes, accessories, and shoes. From 19 July 2026, large companies will no longer be allowed to destroy these unsold products. And honestly? It is about time.

For years, fashion brands have overproduced and then quietly treated the leftovers as waste. Perfectly usable items have been destroyed simply because they did not sell fast enough or fit the business model. That should never have been normal.
At Sock by Sock, we welcome this move. It is an important step toward more accountability in the fashion industry. But let’s not pretend it solves everything.
Because banning destruction only deals with the outcome. The real problem starts earlier: overproduction.
If brands continue making far more than people actually need, then the system is still broken. Waste does not begin when products are destroyed. It begins when excess is built into the model from the start.
That is why we believe unsold products should be seen as an opportunity for circular solutions, not as disposable leftovers. Less waste, more responsibility, and way fewer excuses. So yes, these new EU rules matter. But real change means rethinking how fashion is produced in the first place.
Because the issue is not only what happens to unsold clothes.
It is why there are so many unsold clothes to begin with.
